WILLIAM FLYNN 27th October 1920 – 8th July 2009

The funeral was held at St Denys’ Church on July 17th for Bill Flynn, the father of Gill Douglas.

Bill was born in Aston, Birmingham and lived in Birmingham all his life until he became unwell just over two years ago and he moved with his wife of 63 years, Celia, to Ravensthorpe.

During his working life he was an expert metal spinner involved in projects for the Military, the Corona shields for the nuclear industry and he also designed the huge globe that was the centrepiece of the World Scout Jubilee in August 1957.

After working for English Electric and IMI he set up his own factory where he produced the “flexivents” used in tumble driers.

In WWII he joined the RAF spending most of his time in Egypt, Libya, Jordan and Palestine. He was part of a special armoured scouting force whose role was to guard forward landing stripes and the pipelines that crossed the desert. They also formed a communications link over these vast areas.

Bill met Celia just after the war when they both were working at Austins in Longbridge. Together they had three children, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. All of them remember him for his generosity and great sense of fun.

Our sympathy goes out to them all – especially to Celia.
